International Kazoo Day - February 19

International Kazoo Day

International Kazoo Day, inspired by the USA's National Kazoo Day, has been adopted by kazoo players worldwide to celebrate this unique instrument and humming together.

Kazoo players in countries from Armenia to Zimbawe take to the streets and celebrate International Kazoo Day with humming and and music. Postings are made on social media such as Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, Tik Tok, SnapChat, and Twitter.

Although the exact time and source of the creation of International Kazoo Day is unknown, it is thought to have developed from a years long effort by the United Nations to find a way to bring all of the countries of the world together in a positive celebration of universal happiness found in the humming along on kazoos of all shapes and sizes from all cultures of the world.

The kazoo is derived from a family of instruments known as mirlitons that create unique sounds through the process of sympathetic vibration caused by the connection of the instrument with human vocal cords through the mouth.

The earliest known mirlitions were thought to have developed in Africa and spread throughout the world. In the United States of America in the middle 1800's the mirliton was re-invented in the form of the "down south submarine" a mirlition device that was later re-named the "kazoo."

Originally produced in tin, the kazoo is now found in many forms including wood, metal, and plastic. Followers of International Kazoo Day celebrate the joy of humming and the inclusiveness of the kazoo with hopes of building harmony and hope throughout the world.

If everyone on earth would take a few moments to hum together, it is hoped that together we could overcome our differences, eliminate war, hunger, disease, poverty, greed, and violence, and create with music a world of joy, love, and harmony.

So celebrate International Kazoo Day with joy in your heart and a loud hum. Let's hum together!

More Information About Kazoos

The History Of The American Kazoo

The kazoo was invented in the 1840's and first presented to the world at the Georgia State Fair in 1852 as the "Down South Submarine".

Legend tells us that the kazoo was invented by collaboration of Alabama Vest (American black) and Thaddeus Von Clegg (German-American clockmaker).

Commercial production of the Kazoo began many years later in 1912. Manufacturing was started by Emil Sorg in Western New York.

Sorg joined up with Michael McIntyre, a Buffalo tool and die maker. Production moved to Eden, NY where the factory museum remains today as a working museum.
